Building Your 72-Hour Earthquake Kit

The 72-hour standard exists because historical disaster data consistently shows that professional emergency resources—search and rescue teams, medical units, utility crews—are typically overwhelmed for the first three days following a major earthquake. Your household must be capable of functioning independently during that window.

A complete earthquake kit is distinct from a general emergency kit in several important ways. Earthquake damage can compromise your home's structure, cut off water and gas lines, and create hazards that require specific tools to navigate safely.

Apartment residents face unique challenges. You may not control your building's structural integrity, and evacuation routes can be compromised quickly.
